Framework 06 — Lunar Network Economy

Lunar markets begin when missions can connect.

The Event

Blue Origin has introduced a hybrid communications system for its Blue Ring Lunar Express spacecraft, designed to transmit data from the lunar surface to Earth at speeds of up to 1 Gbps. Blue Ring is also designed to provide communications, data storage, power and computing services for hosted or deployed payloads.

The significance of this development extends beyond faster data transmission. It represents a broader shift in lunar activity: communications may gradually move from being equipment built separately into each mission toward becoming shared infrastructure available as a service.

As the number of landers, rovers, scientific instruments and human operations around the Moon increases, reliable connectivity will become essential for transmitting data, coordinating assets and maintaining continuous operations.⁠

The Analysis

Early lunar missions are largely self-contained. Each operator must secure its own communications capacity, ground support and data-management architecture. This increases cost and complexity while limiting how easily independent missions can work together.

Shared connectivity changes that structure.

Instead of every mission building a complete communications system, multiple operators could access common relay, storage and transmission services. This reduces duplicated infrastructure and allows smaller missions to operate without carrying the full cost of an independent communications architecture.

Connectivity can therefore lower barriers to lunar participation. Scientific institutions, commercial operators and emerging space companies may be able to deploy instruments or vehicles while purchasing communications capacity from an infrastructure provider.

The economic value is not created by bandwidth alone. It emerges when connectivity becomes reliable, repeatable and accessible to multiple customers.

At that point, communications becomes a service market.

The Framework

Lunar Activity creates increasing demand for dependable communication between the lunar surface, lunar orbit and Earth.

Shared Connectivity provides common infrastructure that can support multiple missions instead of remaining exclusive to a single operator.

Lower Mission Barriers result from reducing the cost, mass and complexity associated with building independent communications systems.

Multi-Mission Access allows landers, rovers, scientific instruments and future human operations to use the same underlying network.

Service Market emerges when connectivity, data relay, storage or processing can be purchased as recurring services.

Economic Coordination becomes possible when independent operators can exchange data, synchronize activities and function within a connected lunar environment.

Connection to the Space Economy

A functioning lunar economy will require more than transportation and resource access. It will also require systems that allow separate assets to operate as part of a larger environment.

Communications infrastructure can produce recurring demand, support specialized providers and make other lunar services more viable. Reliable connectivity may strengthen logistics, surface exploration, resource operations, navigation and scientific data markets by giving them a common operational layer.

Within the Space Economy Index, this development is most relevant to the Space Research DataPool, where new communications and mission-support capabilities represent technological progress, and the Space Competition DataPool, as companies compete to establish foundational services for future lunar activity.

Blue Origin’s system does not itself establish a complete lunar economy. It demonstrates one of the conditions required for such an economy to emerge: infrastructure that can serve more than one mission.

The Moon becomes a market when connectivity stops being mission-specific and starts becoming shared infrastructure.
